Providing nutritious meals to the sick and vulnerable in our Bay Area community.

About us

Project Open Hand’s mission is to improve health outcomes and quality of life by providing nutritious meals to the sick and vulnerable, caring for and educating our community. Every day, we prepare 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging. We serve San Francisco and Oakland, engaging more than 125 volunteers. Every day, thousands of people in the Bay Area are battling serious, life-threatening illnesses. And every day, Project Open Hand is there for them – providing healthy, nourishing meals with love. Accessing healthy food is critical for people who are too sick or frail to shop and cook for themselves. We also provide hot, nutritious meals for seniors to help them tackle the health challenges of old age. Good nutrition enables our clients to better manage the symptoms of disease, mitigate the side effects of treatment, and can speed recovery. Our registered dietitian supports and counsels our clients to help them feel better by eating right. In addition to providing life-sustaining food to our clients, Project Open Hand nourishes our entire community by engaging thousands of volunteers and donors, as well as dozens of local companies, in the important work of feeding neighbors in need.

It's National Volunteer Month! In the last fiscal year, more than 3,200 volunteers generously devoted tens of thousands of hours of service to Project Open Hand. It's with our heartfelt gratitude to our remarkable volunteers who selflessly contribute every day to our mission, and helping us to serve more meals with love! This past weekend we came together to celebrate our incredible volunteers at a volunteer appreciation event! Special thanks go to SPARK Social SF and Parklab Gardens, Domingo's International Kitchen and Fusion, as well as Jane H Cookies for helping us to put on an amazing event.

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of San Francisco legend and GLIDEsf co-founder, Reverend Cecil Williams. As a visionary leader whose commitment to social justice, civil rights, and serving the people of San Francisco who needed it most, his legacy has touched thousands of lives. In response to the news of Reverend William’s passing, Project Open Hand CEO Paul Hepfer said: “Cecil was a true leader, someone who led with compassion and love, transforming so many lives in San Francisco and the Tenderloin community. His work alone has led to hundreds of thousands of people receiving the care that they need physically, mentally, and spiritually. We are incredibly grateful to him for sharing his time here with us.” Former Project Open Hand CEO Tom Nolan, who served from 1994 – 2010 and worked closely with Reverend Williams during that time, said this: "Cecil was definitely a part of the Project Open Hand family. One memory that sticks out the most in my mind was the time we walked to City Hall together,” he says. “Walking into that building was amazing – it was like the Red Sea was parting. Everyone knew him and had so much respect for him. By the time we walked out, he'd secured enough money for the food program at GLIDE to keep it running. That was the power of Cecil Williams. I'd never seen anything quite like that before.” More information about the Reverend’s memorial service can be found at https://lnkd.in/g28GBMB3

Join me in supporting Project Open Hand's (POH) mission to provide nutritious meals to people with HIV/ AIDS and other chronic illnesses!! POH's Young Professionals Council is guest bartending at Jackalope (again!) on 4/4 from 5:30-8:30 PM to raise money for POH- all tips will go directly towards POH and their amazing work. POH was founded during the AIDS Crisis to ensure people with HIV/ AIDS had access to healthy food, and they have since continued and expanded their impact on the Bay Area community. I've been so fortunate to volunteer with such a mission-driven org for the past 4 years! You can learn more about POH here https://openhand.org/. Please join us for a good cause and enjoy a drink or two!! (See some pics from the last time we fundraised at Jackalope in October, so much fun!) #ProjectOpenHand #YoungProfessionalsCouncil #Fundraiser #GiveBack #SanFrancisco
